THE BIRTH OF AN IDEA

It took our group quite some time to come up with an item/idea that hadn’t been done before.

We brainstormed from a product that helps you put your shoes on (super hard to make btw) to a mini projector.

The birth of our idea didn’t happen until we started thinking about issues we’ve had with technology and how we wished there was a product made to solve that particular issue.

In our case, that issue was wanting to watch videos on your phone in bed, but being too lazy to hold your phone or having it fall flat on your face.

Upon googling the product we wanted to make, we realized it already existed but for forty dollars USD which is roughly fifty two dollars Canadian. This made our idea the perfect high tech item to build low tech at a cheaper price.

FINAL PRODUCT

Testing it out on the chair was a success, so we then took the final product upstairs into one of our residences.

This time we tested to see if we’d be able to use it to watch videos in bed, which is what our product was intended for.

To our surprise it worked out way better than we expected. We were able to create exactly what we were hoping for.

We were extremely happy and surprised with the success of our product.

One critique we will add though, is that we wished the shower head hose had been slightly longer, so the phone screen would be closer to our faces when using it. Other than that our idea had been extremely successful

Below is a super low-quality advertisement of our product, that shows it in action.

PROCESS #2

Taking the gorilla tape we taped the clips together this time, instead of trying to glue them and it WORKED!

The glue being an utter failure and having to use duct tape, not only made everything ten times easier, but we came to the realization that it was more efficient and durable than gluing would have been.

Using the same tape, we proceeded to attach the phone holder onto the base of the product.

Once that was finished we tested our product out on a chair, to see if it would be able to attach and hold the weight of the phone.

One our main concerns with purchasing the shower head hose was everything collapsing, because it was significantly heavier than the other supplies.

PROCESS

It was time to get down to business.

First we started building the part that would be holding the phone.

Taking our popsicle sticks out of the bag we began glueing them together, layering the popsicle sticks on top of one another. We layered them so it would have a better chance at being able to hold the weight of a phone.

After the popsicle sticks were glued together and dried, we took the hangers and glued two on the top and two on the bottom to secure our phone.

When that was done we started on the middle section of our product, which is where the shower hose and binder clips come into play.

Taking the binder clips we attached two together, then clipped it onto one end of the hose to see how it would look like. Our thought process here was that both clips would be glued together, with one side attached to the hose and the other would attach onto a bed frame or piece of furniture.

SUPPLIES

After successfully giving birth to our idea, the next step was supplies.

We surprisingly went into making our product without looking at tutorials, but instead referencing one photo (the one in our first blog post) and improvised.

When looking for supplies we needed to find somewhere with:

1. Decently priced items

2. Everything we needed

Sorry Dollarama, but our store of choice was the Walmart on Upper James street. After a twenty five minute drive from McMaster parking lot M, we had arrived four girls on a multimedia mission.

Hardware, crafts and the shower department is where we searched for our supplies.

In order for us to make our bed frame phone holder, we needed the base to be made out of a material that was able to move around and sturdy. We ended up purchasing a shower head hose because of it’s bend-ability.

The popsicle sticks and hangers were purchased for the part of our product that would be holding the phone, binder clips to attach the product to a bed frame or any other surface of choice.

Last but not least we purchased 527 multi use glue to hold it all together.
